MMK's bittersweet success

By Loraine Abueg (December 2009)

The College of Science Student Council (CSSC), organizer of the annual College of Science Carolfest, formally announced last December 7, 2009 the new final winners of the Carolfest which are UP PMHS Chorale for first place with a score of 88%, Myusikal Matklab (UP Math Club) for second place with a score of 87.875% and the UP GeoSoc Choir, MBB Star Activity (UP MBBS) and Do Re Mi Fasciola (UP ABM) shared the third place, each with a score of 87.625%.

The CSSC admitted that there were errors in the tally of the judges’ scores at the end of the competition that evening. Hence, the announced winners were UP PMHS for first place and a tie between UP GeoSoc and Do Re Mi Fasciola for second place. The Myusikal Matklab (MMK) was thought to have garnered only 87.5% making them the fourth highest scorer in the said choral singing competition. In a letter addressed to the UP community, the CSSC expressed their apologies to the participating organizations, to the judges and to the entire College community for the error that they have made. “We would like to assure everyone that there was no malice involved in the process and it was an unfortunate case of human error.”, written in the apology letter from the council.

The theme of this year’s Carolfest was “Christmas on Film: Capturing Melodies of the Holiday Cheer” wherein eleven singing choirs from various student organizations within the College of Science competed. Our very own MMK sang “Circle of Life”, from the movie “The Lion King”, and the required medley of “Pasko Na Naman” and “Noche Buena”. The group, composed of Ralph dela Cruz, Karlo Lumbao, Aldrin Villamar, John Leihmar Toledo, Jocel Dilag, Rafael Perea, Natalie Diesta, Claret Felicitas and Olga Martinez, sang both pieces very beautifully. The group’s performance was delightful and creative that was enjoyed by everyone who watched and listened to them. A standing ovation by the UP Mathematics Club members who were present at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium and a very loud applause from the audience and judges followed the group’s performance. John Leihmar Toledo was also given a special award for being an outstanding performer that night and was named “Voice of the Night” for his solo in the “Circle of Life”.

Congratulations to our dear Myusikal Matklab! You have truly made us all proud.

UPMC is now open for application!

By Edineille Geronimo

Since its conception in 1921, the UP Mathematics Club had long abided by its visions and missions: to increase the awareness of mathematics and its various fields of endeavor in our society. Presently, it has provided the university with activities such as the Annual Freshman Math Quiz and the Annual Search for the Math Wizard, meant to further promote appreciation and awareness in Mathematics and its applications. Furthermore, the organization helps the university student body through tutorials and by sponsoring book sales and distributing free sample exams.

Despite the many activities the organization plans and provides, the members still have time to pursue activities for themselves. This includes sportsfests, intra-org competitions, lunch dates, and various university-wide and college-wide activities.

The UP Math Club, although having been a loyal member to the College of Science group of organizations, is comprised of members coming from various colleges: including but is not limited to CS, Engg, CAL, Educ, FA, Tour and CBA.

In line with these and the goal of bringing together the university's math students and enthusiasts, the UP Mathematics Club is now open for application for the 2nd semester AY 2009-2010 to all bonafide undergraduates of the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Sign up at the UPMC booth along MB Walk on November 24-27, 2009. Applicants' orientation will be on December 1, 2009 (5:30 pm) at the UPMC Tambayan (along AS Walk). For inquiries, contact Mica (09273857227).

Be a part of the rich history and lasting legacy of the university's oldest academic organization. Join UP Math Club now!

Books, cookies and chocolates sale

By Ram Vincent Tomaneng (November 2009)

One of the ideals of the UP Mathematics Club is to be of service to the studentry. To conform to this, the club has once again, held its semi-annual Book Sale last November 4-6 at the College of Science Atrium and last November 9-20 at a booth along the Mathematics’ Building Walk from 8:00 am until 5:30pm daily.

The club sold The Calculus 7 (TC7) and College Algebra and Trigonometry (CAT), both by Louis Leithold and University Physics, 12th ed. (Univ. Physics) by Young, Freedman, et. al. TC7 was purchased mainly by undergraduates who are taking up Bachelor of Science Degrees, from colleges such as Engineering and Science, being a reference for the Mathematics’ 50 series (Math 53, 54, 55). Univ. Physics, a new addition to the UP MC book sale, was usually bought by those taking the courses Physics 71, 72, or 73. Although it was not the ‘season’ of CAT, it was still availed of by a few. Reservations for Linear Algebra with Applications by Bernard Kolman needed by students taking up the course Math 114 were also accepted.

These books were sold at a discounted price, less than the retail prices in bookstores. Free sample examinations in their chosen Math subject were given for every purchase. In addition to the Math and Physics books, cookies and chocolates made by some UP MC members were also sold at the booth for affordable prices..

If you are interested to order or purchase any of the books mentioned above, please contact Junelle Feliciano (09151751493).

Eng’g freshies hailed MATHia Wars bosses

By Loraine Abueg (September 2009)

For the 32nd year, the UP Mathematics Club has once again given a new flavor to freshman Math competition through the Annual Freshman Math Quiz (FMQ) with MATHia Wars as this year’s theme. Thirty-eight teams battled during the Elimination Round on August 31, 2009 and took the 2-hour brain-wrecking Elimination Exam made by the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC).

John Francis Simeon (BS Mathematics), who competed under the name Team Reficul, topped the elimination exam and was fortunate to advance to the Final Rounds. Team Reficul and 15 other teams who had the highest scores in the elimination round vied for the bosses’ title in the MATHia Wars Final Rounds held on September 5, 2009 at the Marine Science Auditorium.

After hours of exciting competition, Team Gambit ruled as the winner of this year’s FMQ. The team, composed of Princess Camille Rosales (BS Computer Science), Jake Gacuan (BS Chemical Engineering) and Maurice Tristan Donalvo (BS Electrical Engineering), was hailed as Master Boss of the contest. Team Julian & the Chipmunks, Team DNE and Team Pura were the second, third and fourth placers, respectively.

Dr. Jose Ernie Lope, Mr. Lucky Erap Galvez and Mr. Louie John Vallejo, all from the Institute of Mathematics, were the competition’s distinguished judges. Aside from Mr. Galvez and Mr. Vallejo, several UPMC alumni also came to watch the FMQ and support the club in this very successful event.

UPMC gets 'sporty'

By Marivic Fan (August 2009)

In line with the mission of developing cooperation and good relationship among the members of the organization, the UP Mathematics Club conducted its semestral sports fest last July 25, 2009 at the UP Diliman Campus. Headed by Vice President Augustine Arandia, the membership committee became the frontrunner and overseer of the said activity.

The three standing committees of the club, namely, the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC), the Public Relations Committee (PRC), and the Ways and Means Committee (WMC), competed in 5 different events which include the Amazing Race and several Philippine games. The majority of the events took place at the UP Lagoon.

This friendly competition among the three standing committees of the club became a success in fostering a harmonious relationship not only within each committee but most especially within the whole club. “The main goal of this activity is team building. We want to develop the team spirit among the committees. We want them to know their weaknesses as a group so as to improve on them”, said Augustine Arandia, Membership Committee Head.

The activity was concluded with the Academic Affairs Committee being the over-all champion, and the Ways and Means Committee and Public Relations Committee taking the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

The Institute of Mathematics (IMath) held its annual institute welcome party for the freshmen batch 2009-2010 last June 22, 2009. Facilitated by the institute officers from the College of Science Student Council, the program featured games and other activities prepared by the council, in cooperation with the two Math organizations (UP Mathematics Club and UP Mathematics Majors’ Circle).

“The program aims to orient the freshies into their new life in the institute and to familiarize them with their fellow Math majors, the Student Council and the Math Orgs”, said Ramon Marfil, Institute of Mathematics representative to the CSSC.

UP Math Club gives hand on children's literacy

By Erika Moises (May 2009)

In support of the University Student Council's Community Fair, the UP Mathematics Club sponsored a short film showing for the kids in Pook Ricarte, Palaris and Dagohoy in UP Diliman Campus last May 9, 2009. The fair aims to promote awareness on social and political issues and to offer various activities for the locals in the said communities.

Several student organizations from the university also participated in the different workshops prepared by the USC, including Voters' Education, Paralegal Training, Children's Literacy, Medical Missions and Art Workshops.

Though hampered by the heavy rain earlier that day, the fair was successfully concluded with over a hundred participants from the different residential areas within the campus.

"Surprisingly, the locals were still enthusiastic about the event despite the bad weather. This work of charity is truly an inspiring sight." said Karlo Lumbao, incumbent UPMC President.

The Community Fair is the first among the numerous community service projects of the University Student Council in which the UP Mathematics Club plans to be a part of.

UPMC's new board of directors proclaimed

By Erika Moises (April 2009)

After three rounds of balloting, the votes have finally been casted and the organization now opens its doors to its new set of officers: Karlo Victor Lumbao (President), Augustine Arandia (Vice-President), Loraine Abueg (Secretary), Jocel Isidro Dilag (Treasurer), Ann Junelle Feliciano (Auditor), Melissa Janelle Dy (Academic Affairs Committee Chairperson), Erika Paula Moises (Public Relations Committee Chairperson) and Katrina Gabrielle Padua (Ways and Means Committee Chairperson).

The election was held last March 13, 2009, with the second and third balloting following on March 17 and March 19, respectively. The result was proclaimed shortly after the third and last balloting.

"It was something I dreamed of ever since I joined the organization. Now I have the opportunity to share all the knowledge and expertise I have learned in my college to my much-loved UP Math Club.", said Jocel Dilag, Business Administration major and the sole non-CS (College of Science) student among the board.

With the management of the organization resting upon their shoulders, the newly-elected officers are optimistic to the year ahead of them, as made evident by the plans they have laid down on the club's annual Meeting de Avance.

"Though a bit idealistic, I believe the plans of the board for this coming academic year is still attainable. Thus, participation from the members is highly called for. We plan on creating a mark in the organization's history by making some changes in several aspects, but we hope that through these changes, we can create a better future for UP Math Club." said Karlo Lumbao, the newly-elected UPMC President, in an interview following the announcement of the election's winners.

The officers' one-year term would start after their oath-taking on the 29th of March, along with the induction of the organization's newest members.
